Do you believe in the saying, “If it tastes so good, then it is probably not good for you”
Countless times I find myself on the fence, whether the snack in my hand is healthy for me or not. I was heartbroken as a child being told that chocolate is not good for you, who does not love chocolate?
Well, it turns out that most foods that people scare you away from, actually have great health benefits. You can only imagine my sigh of relief when I learned this too. There is hope for mankind after-all :-). These are 6 foods that are considered unhealthy but do actually have some health benefits if consumed moderately....
When you are seated down, ready for the movie to begin and you keep side-eyeing the bowl of popcorn on the table beside you. To eat or not to eat, that is the question. And the answer is, to eat. Popcorn is considered to be a low calorie snack. It is also high in fiber which we all need to help maintain our bowel situation. Popcorn contains an antioxidant that helps to reduce the risk of illnesses such as heart disease. A bowl of popcorn surely can add to your health and make the movie 100% better.
Yummy! I would like to believe that this particular type of banana is most common among some African and Caribbean communities. Plantain is most likely to be fried or sometimes baked and that is why it may be a no-no to some. However, it tastes heavenly when prepared just right and even better with the health benefits. Plantains are also a good source of fiber such as popcorn, but they are also rich in Vitamin A, C and B-6. Talk about strengthening that immune system!
Can you say “Betty bought some butter, but the butter was bitter, so Betty bought some better butter to make the bitter butter better” without making a mistake? Try it! You can also try adding a little more butter in the kitchen too because apparently it is not all that bad. Believe it or not, butter contains vitamin A that is useful for healthy skin, good vision and strengthening your immune system. More importantly butter is rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a fat that helps to reduce the risk of colon, breast and liver cancer. But remember, the health benefits come only when it is consumed in moderation.
Le pain! And some of us take this french word for bread quite literally during breakfast. Oh the pain of the 40 pounds that I will gain after eating this half a slice of bread! *Dramatic sigh* … Well lets calm down a bit and learn how bread is actually good for us. Bread is a great source of energy for our beautiful bodies and the carbohydrates contribute to balancing the glucose in our blood. In addition to fiber that keeps our gut happy, bread has prebiotic properties that allows the good type of colon bacteria to flourish and keep doing the good work they do. Again, less is more and one should eat bread moderately, preferably wholegrain bread.
2. WHITE RICE
Just like bread, white rice is a brilliant source of energy, and yes it is gluten free. It also contains folate (folic acid) that is much needed to make red and white blood cells in the bone marrow, this is especially recommended for pregnant women. White rice is also packing on magnesium and iron that help keep our bodies and hearts nice and strong. Although brown rice is the healthier option when it comes to rice, white rice is still quite nutritious and tasty too.
Can I get an Amen! Gosh, I know I am not the only person that is relieved that chocolate made it on the list. All that sweetness, all that milk and cream, surely it is a formula for disaster when it comes to eating healthy. Chocolate is not only delicious but it is packed with vitamins and minerals such as calcium that is vital in skin repair and health. It also has flavanols and antioxidants that are known to reduce the risk of heart disease. The flavanol is also said to improve blood flow to the brain hence improve its function. And let us not forget that the caffeine and theobromine also stimulate the brain.
I hope we won’t shy away from these foods next time we are invited to that wedding or doing our grocery shopping. I like to think that any food has nutritional value, even if it is in the smallest amount. I wish to remind you though, too much of a good thing is a bad thing, and that we can enjoy the benefits of these foods if we do not over do it. With that being said, cheers to healthy eating!
